While medical coders almost never interact with patients, certificate and degree programs include an introduction to the health and medical industry to help round out a coder’s education. At Atlanta Technical College, students take anatomy and physiology and medical terminology for allied health sciences. Florida Community College’s course list includes health law, health care delivery systems,pathophysiology and health insurance billing. Florida National College has three campuses and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The college is also approved to provide veteran’s training by the state and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The college offers a certificate program for nursing assistants. The college’s Allied Health Sciences Division oversees the program. The program is designed to give students the basic skills and knowledge that will equip them to gain employment as an entry-level certified nursing assistant. Students must successfully pass the Florida nursing license examination before starting work at a health care facility. A minimum of 15 credit hours are required to complete the program. In addition, students must complete 90 hours of hands-on clinical practice before graduating from the program.

Although general core classes are more usually found in a bachelor’s degree program, some programs include them to help their students succeed. Atlanta Technical College’s schedule includes classes on fundamentals of English and document processing. In Moraine Valley Community College’s short certificate program, students take courses in keyboarding and computers in allied health.
Mandl School, The College of Allied Health offers an associate degree program in medical assisting. In the 60-credit program, students take courses on how to collect and prepare laboratory specimens, draw blood, take electrocardiograms and prepare patients for X-rays. In addition, courses cover topics schwas recording vital signs, taking medical histories, assisting physicians during examinations and medical billing and coding. Students study medical terminology, microbiology and law and ethics and must complete an extermination. Following the program, students can find work in medical clinics, hospitals, doctors’ offices, insurance companies and laboratories.
